Public Parks as
Urban Public Spaces
This is a photograph of the DDA Park at Harkesh Nagar from the balcony at the R&D building at IIITD. Public Parks as Urban Public Spaces is an extension of the project "Urban Spaces and the Public in Delhi" to trace the spatial and temporal history of some of the major public parks in Delhi.

The unavailability of data on the spatial distribution of public parks in Delhi sowed the seed of this project.

In this study, we spatially organised public parks on the map of Delhi and derived correlations between the population density, infrastructure, and socio-economic characteristics of the population.

We gather the data from the MCD, the DDA, and the DJB. We organised it using Google Earth, Excel, and QGIS. After its systematic representation, clusters were identified and analysed. Secondary literature, including the Master Plans of Delhi, supported curating the results and correlation through observations.

The study's observations encourage the state's urban planners to design the places to have green places for everyone. The poor need green spaces because the rich have many other options for public places, such as malls, cinema halls, amusement parks, gated community parks, etc. Thus, our study is academically and theoretically oriented and solution and formulation of policies oriented.

This developed as a unique study because such regional analysis has been done for the first time. This opens doors for further studies in the same domain and allows authorities to develop parks in areas that lack them.
District-wise map of Delhi with location of Public Parks
The increasing shade in the various districts in Delhi represents the growing density of the population. The darker the shade, the denser the population. The points represent the location of the parks.

This map gives a glimpse of the distribution of the availability of public parks with respect to the concentration of the population.
